    SANDY HOOK SHOOTING RESPONSE

My Heart is in a Million Pieces

"Breaking news. The unthinkable. Largest mass killing at a school in U.S. History. Everyone filled with sadness. There are no words. Parents rushing to the school to see if the precious child they dropped off this morning is still alive. Twenty children killed plus another 7 adults (including the killer)."

This is what we hear as news of the mass shootings at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut ripples across the television screen. We are glued to the TV for every detail. If you have children, grandchildren or know a child you are likely thinking, "This could happen anywhere."

Be aware that every school by law has a lockdown policy that is practiced several times each year. But as we saw today even the best of plans do not guarantee protection from someone intent on bringing horrific destruction upon innocent people. What can one expect emotionally when this kind of tragedy occurs? Typically people will go through predictable phases of grief following a crisis.

SHOCK-Usually lasts for several hours. Typically we either feel emotionally numb; disoriented and disbelief; "This really can't happen....this can't be true!"

STORM-Usually lasts for days. The turbulence of confusion, uncertainty, making funeral arrangements; saying good-bye to loved ones. The full range of emotions is common including anger, fear, guilt and rage.

SEARCH-Usually lasts for weeks. This is a time to search for new stability. Positive thoughts begin to return. People begin to search for what good can come from such a terrible tragedy.

SEQUEL-Usually takes several months. People move on and live their lives with renewed hope. In the best of circumstances people find other people to attach to.
